The Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) is planning another metro line for the city – a 36km link from Sector 56 to Panchgaon with 28 elevated stations, including an interchange with Rapid Metro.

Officials said this metro extension was discussed at a meeting of HMRTC board, chaired by chief secretary TVSN Prasad, in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

They said HMRTC consultant RITES had already come up with a route plan and will complete the detailed project report (DPR) by the end of this month.

“We are assessing the projection of passengers on this proposed route, which is crucial for designing and sustaining the metro project. Various factors, including current and future population density, employment hubs, residential areas and traffic patterns will be taken into account. The report is expected to be completed soon,” an HMRTC official told TOI.

The proposed route, the official said, is likely to be linked with the existing Rapid Metro line through an interchange station at Sector 56.

Officials said that the HMRTC board also discussed the steady growth in ridership and revenue for Rapid Metro this year. According to their data, the number of passengers using Rapid Metro grew from 12.2 lakh in April this year to 13.8 in May.

Apart from the Sector 56-Panchgaon link, the corporation is in the initial stages of planning another metro line from Gurgaon to Faridabad. HMRTC is reviewing a feasibility study to link the two neighbouring NCR cities of Haryana. A third metro line — from Millennium City Centre to AIIMS-Jhajjar and onwards to Badsa in the district – is in the works.
