SPR Revamp: 8 Flyovers to Come up on Stretch & Underpass at Vatika Chowk

SPR Revamp 8 Flyovers to Come up on Stretch & Underpass at Vatika Chowk

GMDA is planning to redevelop Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) with the construction of eight flyovers and an underpass along the 12km stretch. This comes five months after chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed GMDA officials to modify the Golf Course Road (Extension) upgrade plan to include the entire SPR.

The earlier plan put before Khattar, who is also the GMDA chairman, at the ninth Authority meeting in December proposed constructing five flyovers between the Ghata T-point and Vatika Chowk, the 6km portion of SPR that is also known as Golf Course Extension Road.

When the proposal was put before the chairman, he directed that the project be extended to include the entire stretch of SPR up to NH-8.

Now, according to GMDA officials, apart from the eight flyovers it has proposed, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will also be constructing an underpass at Vatika Chowk, which will further ease traffic flow along the stretch.

“The fresh proposal that we have put together involves the construction of a total of eight flyovers on the stretch from Ghata T-point to NH-8. We will be putting this proposal before the chairman in the next authority meeting, which should take place in the coming weeks. If the proposal is approved, it will take around 30 months to complete the project once construction starts,” said a senior GMDA official.

While five of the flyovers will be built as per the earlier proposal — one each at Golf Course Road T-point, Kadarpur intersection, Pioneer Park traffic signal, the intersection near Splendor Tower, and the St Xavier’s High School intersection — the other three flyovers will be constructed at Tulip Chowk, Andour Heights Road intersection and the point where the road dividing sectors 75 and 75A intersects with that dividing sectors 74 and 74A.

“Apart from these flyovers, there is already a plan in place for an underpass at Vatika Chowk. This will be done by NHAI, which is already constructing the Sohna elevated road that passes through the intersection,” the official said.

NHAI confirmed the development. “The underpass will be built below the Sohna elevated road, connecting both sides of SPR across Vatika Chowk. But it will have no link to the elevated road and will be a completely independent, bidirectional structure,” said an NHAI official.

“Right now, the project is still in the planning stage. We will try to start the work as quickly as possible because it will take another six to seven months for us to complete it even after construction begins. We hope to complete the underpass by the end of this year,” said the official.
